Bonnie has been a member of The Exchange Club of Highline since 2000. During that time Bonnie says that she has had the privilege of serving as President twice, and as Treasurer for 7 years. Bonnie’s greatest honor, however, was to have been chosen as Exchangeite of the Year by both the Highline club and then, later, for the Northwest District. Bonnie as the recipient of The Book of Golden Deeds Award from the highline club was deeply moved and honored.
Bonnie owes the decision to become an Exchangeite to a dear friend and committed Exchangeite, Jim Schafer. Jim convinced her, after she retired as Office Manager from her husband’s OB/GYN practice, that the Exchange Club would offer her opportunities to help and support our local communities.
Bonnie considers her life to have been a very productive journey. Bonnie and husband Steele have been married 51 years, have 2 children, both physicians, and 6 lovely granddaughters. The couple was married in the Chapel at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC in1966, during the agonizing height of the Vietnam War. Steele, fortunately, was not called to serve in Vietnam, but daily they witnessed the terrible tragedy of the broken young men returning from Vietnam to be treated at Walter Reed. Based on that experience, Bonnie and her husband Steele share a deep abiding respect and support for our service men and women.
As Bonnie’s husband was in the Army and later while he was in Medical School at George Washington University Medical School, Bonnie worked as a Research Analyst for a Think Tank in Bethesda, Maryland to support them.
Since retirement 20 years ago, the couple have been fortunate to have had a wonderful and interesting life. Bonnie states that she has enjoyed an almost 2-decade commitment to the Exchange Club putting the club first and foremost. They have traveled to all 7 continents, visited over 30 countries, voyaged down the Snake, Rhine, Main, Danube, Tagus, Volga, Yangtze, Nile, and Amazon rivers. Fished in Alaska, Brazil, Costa Rica, Australia, and the Cook Islands, have hiked and climbed in the Tetons, swam in the Antarctic Ocean and danced on a rooftop in Turkey.
Bonnie has learned that no matter where one travels, that there is, and always will be, a need for generous people to help those in need.
“Being a member of The Exchange Club of Highline has given me the purpose and the satisfaction to fulfill that need. I have had a truly blessed and rewarding life.”
